Forgotten Album of the Month: Fear of a Black Hat soundtrack

This is an interesting post because I’ve never written about a soundtrack before, let alone as Forgotten Album of the Month, but “Fear of a Black Hat” is just one of the funniest damn films I’ve ever seen and the songs are so catchy and stupid that they need to be remembered.

The story of “Fear of a Black Hat” centers on a controversial rap group, N.W.H., or N****** with Hats. The film is a parody of hip hop from the eighties until the time it was made in 1993; another film, Chris Rock’s “CB4” had already come and taken away this film’s momentum but over time the film has enjoyed a rapid cult audience that continues to grow. The songs parody everything from Snoop Dogg (“Ice Froggy Frog”), to Public Enemy ("Wear Yo Hat (Buried and Bald))" to Run-D.M.C. (“My Peanuts.”)

The film’s funniest tracks are without a doubt, “Fuck the Security Guards,” which pokes fun at rent a cops in a way that Das EFX or Da Lench Mob could ever do. But the piece de resistance is “I’m Just a Human,” which rips PM Dawn’s new age mumbo jumbo to shreds by talking about how no matter what color or religion we all are, ‘our shit all comes from the same little hole.’ The hilarity that results from the songs on the soundtrack are endless and will continue to spread as the film is easily available on YouTube.

Discography: The Big F  (Elektra, 1989) Patience Peregrine  EP (Chrysalis, 1993) Is  (Chrysalis, 1993) The Big F was formed out of the ashes of ‘80s new wave titans, Berlin. Once drummer Rob Brill and bassist/vocalist John Crawford decided they didn’t want to make music like “Take My Breath Away” anymore, they amped up the sound and their image as well and linked up with well-known session guitarist Mark Christian. After releasing their debut on Elektra in late 1989, the band toured with the likes of Soundgarden and Voivod. After the disappointing reception of their 1993 sophomore disc, Is , the band split. No Woods: A Chat with Stompbox

S tompbox were a hardcore/metal/rock band from Boston. Their one album, 1994’s Stress on Columbia might be one of the more obscure alt rock records that flooded the marketplace but it’s great. A lot of good riffs and plenty of attitude; unfortunately it didn’t sell and the original band were done by 1995. In 2021, in response to a friend falling ill and having massive bills, the band reunited for their first shows in almost 27 years.
